I just don’t think I’ll ever understand people who purposely crop watermarks out of photos.
I mean, first off, photographers crop the photo and compose it how they do because that’s how they want to look artistically. When you crop it all fucked up-like (and un-proportional, ugh don’t even get me started on that shit), it messes up everything the photographer worked hard to compose and create in the first place. And it completely changes the photo that you fell in love with enough to crop anyway.
Secondly, it’s kind of just a dick move. I mean, good lord, was the small watermark at 50% opacity in the bottom right corner of the photo that big of a distraction to you? Were you going to spontaneously combust if you didn’t crop it out? Was someone holding a knife to your throat? Or did you just think it would make your tumblr blog look that much cooler to your 500 followers?
Photographers are artists, too. I understand that this is the internet, and that shit is going to get posted and reposted and reposted again and again without proper credit or even a nod in the artist’s direction, but for fuck’s sake, please just leave the watermark on. People spend thousands upon thousands of dollars on camera gear and photo shop and everything else that makes their images so great - the least you could do is leave the photo as they intended it. Maybe you aren’t a paying customer, but that watermark might just send a client in that photographer’s direction, if nothing else, and by cropping it out and not giving them proper credit, you’re denying the artist their opportunity do make money doing what they love. Way to go.
